Expanding justice, protecting rights, and strengthening legal systems through strategic partnerships and expert legal advocacy.
The Academy partners with organizations that advance the Rule of Law, protect human rights, and strengthen legal institutions. These partnerships amplify impact, expanding access to justice, reinforcing judicial independence, and defending vulnerable communities. In a world where legal systems face constant threats, these efforts help safeguard democracy and shape the future of justice.

Alfred Friendly Press Partners – Journalists in Exile
The Academy supports and educates members of the Alfred Friendly Press Partners’ Journalist in Exile Program, teaching them about the U.S. legal system. These efforts empower journalists forced to flee their home countries due to persecution. By providing them with opportunities to continue their work in the U.S., this program upholds press freedom—an essential pillar of democracy and the Rule of Law.

National Judicial College – National Judicial Symposium
Judicial independence is the cornerstone of a fair legal system. Through its partnership with the National Judicial College, the Academy helps provide advanced education and training to judges across the U.S., ensuring they remain impartial, well-equipped, and prepared to uphold justice in the face of growing political and social pressures.

A Once and Future Peace – Transforming Justice Through Restorative Practices
Championed by Academy past President Richard Burbidge and former First Lady Suzzane Burbidge, this groundbreaking documentary explores youth restorative justice as an alternative to traditional criminal sentencing. The Academy Foundation funded its production and licensed it to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, expanding its reach and impact. This powerful resource aligns with the Academy’s commitment to advancing justice and ensuring fair treatment under the law.

VECINA – Legal Advocacy for Asylum Seekers
Access to justice is essential for those fleeing persecution–especially now. VECINA provides legal training, mentorship, and direct representation for asylum seekers. Academy Fellows contribute by training with immigration lawyers and representing refugees pro bono. Fellows host trial skills and storytelling workshops, and assist with family reunification efforts—ensuring due process and legal protection for vulnerable individuals.

Polaris – Combatting Human Trafficking
The Academy supports Polaris, a leader in the fight against human trafficking. Polaris works to dismantle trafficking networks, push for stronger policies, and provide direct support to survivors. The Academy Foundation funds these efforts through grants, and Academy Fellows and their spouses help survivors navigate the legal system and reentry into society. Together, the Academy and Polaris work to ensure that legal systems are equipped to combat exploitation and protect human rights.
When we collaborate with organizations as committed as we are, we create a force multiplier effect—combining strengths and expanding impact.
