IATL is an international fellowship of lawyers whose mission is to protect and promote the rule of law. We believe the rule of law is essential to a civilized society and democracy and recognize that the integrity of our judicial system is critical to a thriving democracy.
With recent developments and challenges that our democracy has faced, it becomes increasingly vital for us, as legal professionals, to actively advocate for and education others on the significance of the rule of law.
Each and every day we have the opportunity to influence and shape public perception regarding the importance of the rule of law and the integrity of our judicial system. This is especially important in the times that we are living where the rule of law is threatened as never before.
By raising awareness and engaging in conversations, both within out profession and with the broader public, we can contribute to the protection and preservation of our democratic principles. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:
- Engage in Public Speaking: Offer your expertise and insights at conferences, seminars, or public events related to legal matters. By sharing your knowledge, you can help people understand how the rule of law affects their daily lives and its broader societal implications.
- Community Outreach: Organize or participate in community programs that focus on legal education. Collaborate with schools, community centers, or local organizations to provide workshops or presentations on topics such as the importance of the rule of law, the role of judiciary, and citizens’ rights and responsibilities.
- Collaborative Writing: Contribute articles or opinion pieces to legal publications, newspapers or online platforms, where you can address current legal issues, promote the rule of law, and emphasize the significance of an impartial and independent judiciary.
- Social Media Advocacy: Utilize social media platforms to share educational content, key legal developments, and thought-provoking discussions related to the rule of law. Engage in respectful conversations, addressing misconceptions or concerns, and promoting public understanding.
- Mentorship and Education: Offer mentorship programs or pro bono services to law students, aspiring legal professionals, or individuals seeking legal guidance. By supporting and guiding the next generation, we can instill a deep appreciation for the rule of law and its importance in maintaining a just and fair society.
By actively engaging in these activities, we can each contribute to the public’s understanding of the rule of law and strengthen the trust in our judicial system. IATL is currently undertaking strategic planning and looking at how we can continue to engage in programs and develop collaborative efforts that will make an impact on fulfilling our mission to protect and promote the rule of law.
Thank you for your fellowship and commitment to the legal profession and your unwavering dedication to the rule of law. Please reach out to me with any ideas, questions, or concerns.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Flynn Peterson President, IATL
